Digital ID, Second Copy and Update: What You Need to Know

The RG, or Registro Geral, is the most common civil identification document in Brazil. It is essential for various day-to-day activities, such as opening accounts, registering, accessing public services, among others.

What is the RG?

The RG is the document that proves the identity of a Brazilian citizen. It is issued by state identification institutes, usually linked to public security departments. The RG number is unique per state, meaning that the same person can have more than one RG number if it has been issued by different units of the federation - which should change with the new unified model.

National ID: the new model of identity

Since 2022, Brazil has begun implementing a new model of ID card, officially called the National Identity Card (CIN). This new version uses the CPF as a single identification number throughout the country, replacing the different state ID numbers.

Steps for issuing:

  1. SchedulingThe citizen must make an appointment at an authorized post (such as Poupatempo, Vapt Vupt or the Identification Institute).
  2. Documentation required:
    • Updated birth or marriage certificate;
    • Regular CPF;
    • Proof of residence (in some states);
    • 3×4 photo (some places take them on the spot).
  3. Request in personBiometric data and signature collection takes place on site.
  4. Issuing the documentAfter analysis, the physical document is delivered or can be accessed digitally.

How to access the digital ID?

If your state already offers the CIN, the digital ID can be accessed at GOV.BR app. Just log in with your CPF and password, and look for the "National Identity Card" option. The digital version has the same legal validity as the printed one.
